Multi-faceted Caribbean artist, Kalpee, delivers his newest addition to the “New Calypso” genre, ‘Jump Off’, accompanied by the visually stunning official music video on March 11th.

‘Jump Off’ is a blend of Kalpee’s distinctive new Calypso sound with something new and darker, that expresses the simultaneous fear and exhilaration of standing on a cliff preparing to jump. The perfect blend of his reggae sound, R&B vocals and stirring piano progression create suspense as the ‘Jump Off’ story unfolds.

Visually, the ‘Jump Off’ official music video is a contrast of colors and perspectives, matching the single’s chaotic energy. The story shows Kalpee and leading lady Jalicia Nightingale exploring the beautiful island of Barbados, where Kalpee is forced to choose between his fears, represented by the island souls, and the cliff.

‘Jump Off’ is full of Kalpee’s deeply reflective lyrics, linking back to Kalpee’s youth.

Kalpee said, “I remember going to waterfalls in Trinidad when I was younger and climbing to the top with my friends so that we could jump off, but the anxiety and the fear that I felt would almost always prevent my body from taking the leap. I hated that, cause I felt that I was never in control and that I didn’t have the courage that I needed to trust myself. The thing is, the universe knows how to challenge you and it put me in some situations over the years where, even though I was terrified, I didn’t have a choice but to trust the process, since everything at that time, was out of my control.”

The video is equally as introspective as the single. Josiah Persad, ‘Jump Off’ video director and award-winning filmmaker, said, “Kalpee’s vision for this music video was dark and chaotic, a visual so deep and intense which pushed my creativity and skills and helped me brainstorm outside the box.”

Kalpee explains, “JUMP OFF the video is a visual metaphor for taking that leap into the unknown, the forest souls are a representation of both our greatest fears but also the very thing challenging us to take a leap of faith in ourselves. Sometimes we need help in getting our mindset to a place of acceptance, this like for me can sometimes be a life changing moment or event, but in jump off its represented by Jalicia Nightingale our leading lady, who’s clear ice blue eyes look deep into my soul and bring all my fears to the surface.”

Kalpee has worked with platinum recording superstar Stefflon Don on his sun-soaked single ‘Gimme De Ting,‘ and with an elite line up of Grammy Award producers and writers including: Carla Marie Williams (Beyonce, Britney Spears, Rudimental, Sean Paul), Yei Gonzales (Diplo, Cardi B, Dj Khaled), Santiago Rodriguez (Little Mix, Pit Bull, Akon) and The Anmls (The Weeknd, Future, BANKS, Belly, D.R.A.M, French Montana, Meek Mill). He has received radio support from BBC 1Xtra’s DJ Target and DJ Ace as well as Capital 1Xtra’s Ras Kwame. He has also gained accolades from EARMILK, Official Charts, 1883 Magazine, CLASH, Complex UK, Hunger TV, Ladygunn, GRM Daily, Bonafide Magazine, House Of Solo and Guap Magazine.

Kalpee will once again be pioneering the “Island Wave” stage atSXSW 2022, with the aim of continuing to create a growing platform for Caribbean artists to come together, showcase, celebrate and support each other’s music. Listed as a “recommended watch”, the first show was captured virtually in Kingston, Jamaica, and successfully launched as part of SXSW online on March 19th, 2021, ranking in as one of the top-watched shows of the festival.

First of its kind “Island Wave” is now not only the official home to Caribbean music at SXSW, but also the first home of “New Calypso”, a genre being pushed by Trinbagonian musicians as a way to identify their musical heritage, which they proudly carry forward.

Kalpee will be sharing the stage with Emmy-nominated TessellatedSoca songstress Nailah Blackman, genre-bending “Magic” singer Jimmy OctoberTrinbagonian band Freetown Collective and Jaz Elise, the Jamaican contemporary artist who fuses soul, R&B, reggae and dancehall seamlessly.

As Kalpee continues to explore his new Calypso sound and pursue his projects with intentional passion, he is very much affirming his position as an artist to watch in 2022.
